April 1, 2010:
Trapeze Date Night!
Bloody hell we’ve had a busy couple of weeks! Between planning a wedding, the missus starting a new gig, getting audited at work and buying a new love pad, we’ve haven’t had a spare second to scratch ourselves let alone contribute here. But none the less things are settling down and we’re back and let me tell you, back with a bang as we have a cracker of a date night for ya!
Ever shit yourself on a date? Figuratively that is. As Mandy’s sneaky peak post conveyed, round 2 of our 5 date, healthy dating series took us to Emerald City Trapeze for a high flying, fear beating adventure.
Situated in the heart of the Sodo district, Emerald City Trapeze is a full service trapeze and aerial studio. We signed up for their bread and butter Flying Trapeze class, swinging off 7 days a week at times convenient for everyone.
Greeted by the entire class, the first thing that struck us was the setup.
Built in an old wooden warehouse, accented with funky, comfy furniture, the first thing to catch your eye is the huge safety net!
The net and corresponding trapeze equipment is gigantic taking up most of the warehouse. The nerves kicked in!
Meeting our instructor we quickly got harnessed up and ushered to the practice bar. Taking the edge slightly off our nerves, we practiced holding the bar and swinging our legs around monkey bar style all in preparation for our end goal of a high flying catch.
I don’t know about you but it’s been about 25 years since the last time I was on a set of monkey bars even then I was bloody hopeless.
200 pounds and 10 years of office work later, swinging my legs around was tough but after a few practices I got it.
Cheer Leader Mandy did it first time as gracefully as any of the instructors! It was beautiful.
All ready to go, it was time for the real deal. With the nerves now in over drive, Mandy hooked up to the safety ropes and headed up the ladder.
Doing great, Mandy got to the platform, reached out and grabbed the bar and took the inevitable leap of faith. Swinging her legs around like a champion, letting go of the bar completely on the second swing and finishing with the perfect somersault, she jumped off the safety net euphoric and smiling from ear to ear. Brilliant!
BUT all failings aside I was hooked! Spending the next 2 hours swinging, I finally got my legs around in time and eventually worked into a catch. Let me tell you, it was incredible. Really great.
One last thing to note about Emerald City Trapeze is the camaraderie.
You really feel like part of the family there everyone cheering you on and making you feel at home.
I’ll be back again with Mandy, with an up and coming work outing and with anyone who else who wants to go!
Cheers, Brett
Couple things to know before trying out a Date Night Trapeze Style:
- DON'T EAT A MASSIVE AMOUNT OF PASTA RIGHT BEFOREHAND! Really. Not good. Have a small bite, but don't overstuff yourself. You will regret it!
- Stay away from loose clothing. WE wore gym clothes that were snug fitting. You don't want things to snag.
- NO JEWELRY! Or anything that can catch, rings especially.
- Stretch out beforehand. A lot. WE didn't as much as we should've, and after 5 swings, I was fallng apart!
- HAVE FUN! it's an amazing experience that you really just HAVE to try!
