Date Night at Sky City

February 24, 2010:
Sky City at the Space Needle

He Said:

What is the very best thing you’ve ever eaten?

Picture 002 For me, mum does a chicken snitty with gravy that is out if this world. Like nothing else I’ve ever eaten. On this side of the lake, Mandy’s old man whips up a jambalaya that should be sold in all food outlets nationally. No, internationally. It’s tip top.

But family comfort food aside, what is the absolute very best thing you’ve ever eaten? This week I have a new king atop of my ever growing culinary kingdom by way of the crab cakes at Sky City (On top of the Space Needle). They are…. the very best thing…. I’ve ever eaten.

Since you all know what and where the Space Needle is, I won’t waffle on about the ridiculously, spectacularly, amazing, second to none in Seattle views offered at Sky City and concentrate on the food and service.

Picture 007 To be frank, I wasn’t 100% sold when Mandy mentioned we were taking our own advice and checking out Sky City’s own take on date night.

Back when I first moved here I was actually warned to avoid the emerald’s city’s iconic tourist trap as it was over priced and under-tasting.

But with a free glass of bubbly and entre (main) on offer [as part of their Date Night promotion], the old bean counter in me said hello and away we went.

Picture 014 With what’s becoming a regular occurrence for me and the missus, we shared the Penn Cove clams ($15) for an appetizer. They didn’t disappoint. Cooked in a rich larger broth coupled with a thoughtfully selected chorizo picante, let me tell you, a few unpleasant words were shared when deciding who was getting the last few!

With a great selection of beers and wines, we grabbed a couple of cold ones, sat back and enjoyed the view.

Picture 015This was short lived however as our new friend, Sous Chef Kevin White, surprised us with a mixed plate of Sky City’s finest appetizers.

Crab cakes, Dungeness Crab and Artichoke Dip and Prosciutto Wrapped Beecher’s Flagship Cheese.

All fresh and inviting. But man, those Crab Cakes!

Dinner was just as delicious. I knocked back a well cooked pork chop with a delicate bourbon maple glaze ($39, but FREE with the Date Night Promotion)while Mandy had the seared Ahi Tuna ($44).

She Said:

Like Brett said above, we really weren't expecting much from this Date Night except some great views, a free entree (when another entree was purchased), and champagne that came with their Date Night Promotion – we see the Space Needle from our living room every day. We jog past it every night. No biggie.

WE WERE WRONG: We were blown away.

Picture 029 The service, the food, the view, the mood of the diners, the enthusiasm and pride from every waiter, hostess, and elevator operator we encountered … it was all perfect. Even stopping in the souvenir shop after dinner so Brett could get a penny pressed into a souvenir Space Needle coin – it all blended together for a perfect evening.

The Date Night Promotion was certainly a treat. I’m not sure when they plan on bringing it back again (this was their second installment in 3 months) but hopefully soon.

Be sure to stay tuned to Sky City’s Calendar of Events, and we will of course announce it on the blog if they plan on hosting another. We promise, it will be a date night to remember!

RATINGS:

Space Needle Sky City

400 Broad St (look up, you can't miss it)
Seattle, WA 98109
(206) 905-2100

Romance: 5: The view, the champagne, outside on the observatory deck... as cliche as it may be, if Brett hadn't proposed in Syndey, this is where I'd have wanted him to! You fall in love with Seattle all over again from the observation deck at the Space Needle.

Cool Ambiance/Interior: 5: I'm sorry, you just can't beat that view!

All Around Service: 5: We were well attended to, and throughout the evening, had about 6 different people come up to us to make sure we were doing okay! Was FABULOUS!

Cost: $$$$ = entrees from $22+

Would we recommend it? 5: Yes! And can we come with you?

We went on their last Date Night and had such a great time! It was a bit of a bummer that due to some private Quadrant Homes event they were having we couldn't go out onto the observation deck. Funny you say that about the crab cakes...I LOVE crab cakes, but thought the taste of their's was very off. You must have a much more sophisticated palate that I! Glad you two had such a great time. ☺
