Dark Room Trio @ Western Bridge

Dark Room Trio

She Said:

I know my husband pretty well. I know it takes a lot to get him out with me on one of my artsy-weird escapades. So, i reserve our artsy date nights to paint ball, ACDC Concerts, or roller-derby (if i'm lucky!).

But when i read about the Dark Room Trio on Daily Candy's Weekend Guide, i knew this would be right up both of our alleys, so i signed us up.

What is Dark Room Trio?

Well. It's dancing. And NIGHT VISION GOGGLES. Exactly. Brett had to love it (and clearly, he was pretty excited, the photo here is proof!).

It was happening at Western Bridge, a beautiful gallery hidden in the SODO district.

They are in the middle of an exhibition called Light in Darkness, exploring the use of light as a primary medium. We saw some very cool things, apart from the "main attraction": The Dark Room Trio.

The Dark Room Trio is a 30-minute performance a few nights a week as part of the exhibition. Registration was free, but you had to book well in advance as spots went quickly. (Sadly, last Saturday was their final show.)

The show is described perfectly on the website:
The work of three dancers is presented in a space lit only in the infrared spectrum. The dancers perform sightlessly (!!!), seeking each other in the space with violent or searching gestures, then meeting for clinches or embraces.

A small audience views the performance through night-vision scopes. Using this military technology, the audience is privileged with a view of the proceedings kept from the dancers, who are guided by hearing, touch, and memory.

The viewer must scan the performance space through the narrow field of vision of the scopes, finding the dancers as they move through the space, choosing which performer to focus on.

The scope technology suggests various aggressive or illicit uses, themes that play out through the performance.

They had me at "Night Vision". I knew Brett would cave, too, when he learned he'd be using these goggles.

And it really was fun!

We don't venture out to things like this often, but we certainly will do so more often. It was so beautiful, and so inspiring. I couldn't believe what these three were able to do in absolute pitch black. It was intense.

I'm excited that it opened me up to a new space in SODO that clearly has some very fun shows and installlations ... check out their upcoming calendar!

I highly recommend trying this place out. Keep an eye on all of Seattle's upcoming events by checking this calendar, you're bound to stumble upon something that will surprise you.

So the 3 growlers of Diamond Knot Industrial were not required for Brett to enjoy, or "after 3 growlers, even Brett enjoyed"?
