Taverne Guildhall à Poole Quay

For today's blog post, you will need Google Translate!
That is, of course, unless vous parlez francais! In which case, lisez la suite!

She Said:

"Les... Pois...son, Les Poisson, how I love Les Poisson!"
- The Little Mermaid, 1989

Quand je pense à la cuisine française, fruits de mer est rarement la première chose qui me vient à l'esprit ... qui est, bien sûr, en dehors de cette scène brillante à partir de mon film d'enfance préférés, The Little Mermaid.

Eh bien, tavern Guildhall à Poole Quay aimerait me donner tort.

Datante Heureux!

At-Home Christmas Date Night!

She Said:

Well, no doubt you've noticed that it's that time of year again -- Christmas!!! This is bar-none, hands-down, no doubt my absolute favourite time of year. There are no words to describe the excitement I have for the Christmas season. It starts around June October-ish, and builds and builds into the climactic moment of Christmas morning bliss.

Actually, I think i prefer the build up to Christmas more than the actual day: decorating the house, trimming the tree, shopping in over-heated and over-crowded shops, the smell of mulled wine on the hob, baking bad-for-you foods, and of course - terrible Christmas Movies on television.

It wouldn't be Christmas at the Robertson household without a Christmas-themed Date Night -- we've actually had about three, but who's counting???

Itineraries for an at-home Christmas themed Date Nights can be as random as you want! That's the best part.

Whether it's decorating Christmas cookies together, wrapping presents together in front of the fire, putting lights up on the house, decorating the tree, or simply watching Christmas movies - celebrating in your own way is what makes this Date Night great.

It's a great time of year to simply celebrate each other, and to embrace coziness - so take advantage!

For Brett and me, it's easy. Food, spiced wine, and nostalgic movies. Done.

Brett's been glued to the food channel recently (lucky me and the extra 10 lbs I've gained this month!) and was inspired to make a Christmas ham, so our first to-do this Date Night was a trip to the market to pick up the meat, as well as fixin's for mamma's mulled wine! For the recipe we follow every year - a FOOL PROOF mix for the world's best Mulled wine - is courtesy of Jamie Oliver and can be found here.

The ham recipe we went for was courtesy our new favourite, Nigella. This recipe can be found here.
We got home and Brett started in on the ham. (We very quickly realised our apartment didn't have a pan to fit the ham, so off toASDA we went to snag a bigger one - just a quick 30minute Date Night Detour!). Back in the kitchen, ham boiling away like a happy little piggy, I started in on the Mulled Wine and some homemade mushroom and spinach tarts.

The smells coming from the kitchen were extraordinary.

While we waited for our feast to finish, we curled up on the couch in front of the fire with an array of classic Christmas movies at our disposal - which included Home Alone, Elf, and of course, A Christmas Story.

The ham was finally done and cooked to perfection, so we dug in.

Happy Birthday Jesus, this ham was amazing.

Healthy Date Night: Pizza and Laser Tag!

She Said:

Every once in a while, Brett and i like to venture out on a "Healthy Date Night". Nothing says healthy like Pizza and Laser Tag, RIGHT??

If it's Pizza Express, then yes! It CAN be healthy! Pizza Express is a chain of pizza restaurants (i know, this goes against Brett's "chainy policy") throughout England that offers fabulous wood-fired thin and thick crust pizzas. They are fabulous. And, with a healthy option available, we figured it a great start to our first Dorset Healthy Date Night.

Leggera, from the Italian for light, is Pizza Express' lighter pizza option. They take out the middle of the dough and fill it with salad. Each pizza has only about 500 calories, and still tastes great!

After our bellies were full of yum, Brett and i headed down the block to Laser Quest - Bournemouth's very own Laser Tag center! I was PUMPED when i found out this place existed. I love laser tag! It's just cheesy enough, and just thrilling enough to make the perfect Date Night activity. I scored major points with hunny on this one too.

We showed up (building was a bit tricky to find unless you know what to look for) and had a look around. Wasn't quite what we expected. Reminiscent of my childhood days at the roller rink or the arcade - places like this just seem a lot cooler when you are a kid. As an adult, you pick up on all the things you never really noticed as a child, adrenaline and excitement blinding you to the nastiness. Foul moldy carpets (they had just had a flood in Bournemouth and Laser Quest was hit hard), graffiti on the bathroom stall doors, old creepy candy-grabbers in the corner, the refreshments counter menu lights blinking in and out... But, let's give it a try.

Brett and i were literally the ONLY ones there. We decided to go for it anyway - we'd have the whole court to ourselves! For only £5.95, we got a 20-minute round in the arena. We had to sit through a safety video (my lord please watch this video NOW - was worth the £6 just to see this! ), and then were harnessed up in our Laser Quest Pack. We looked GOOD.

We entered the arena to find black lights illuminating the maze-like structure, fog machines filtering smelly white smoke in to make it even MORE challenging. Timer was on! LET'S DO THIS!

It was actually REALLY fun -- even though it was only Brett and me. Great exercise, great adrenaline. Would be fun to do as a double or triple date, as trying to find one person in the entire maze wasn't as fun as it probably could have been with a larger group.

Cheap, silly, clean and healthy fun. We'll certainly be back for round two - Brett wants vengeance (did i mention i CREAMED him??).

xo, Happy Dating!

L'Assiette in Southbourne

She Said:

Brett's turn to plan date night took us to a sweet little French restaurant over in Southbourne called L'Assiette (French for 'the plate'). He found this place on Trip Adviser - as it is rated NUMBER ONE! of all local restaurants. You can see all the great reviews here! And, we're about to add to them.

This place was spectacular!

We visited on a Thursday night around 7pm, and had the place to ourselves! For such a highly-reviewed restaurant, we were surprised it wasn't more crowded - and it's a tiny spot. Probably no more than 15 tables total. But the fact that we were their only patrons (for about a half hour, then it started filling up), the service we received was impeccable.

Now, as you have read in our past posts, service in England isn't anywhere near what it is in the states, due in part to the fact that tips aren't really a driving incentive over here. But this place - this place breaks the mold. The service was better than most places we'd been to in Seattle!

Once seated, we were immediately brought over a jug of water, and amuse bouche's from the chef - i LOVE this!

Our waiter was quick to help us decide what off the menu to order (as EVERYTHING sounded amazing!). We were sitting by a little window that looked into the kitchen, and was fun to watch the chef hard at work - and the kitchen was impeccable! Spotless.

The menu changes weekly depending on what is in season. We started off with some Parmesan Cheese and Basil Risotto Balls (£5.45) and they were PHENOMENAL. Hot and crispy on the outside, with oozing cheesy rice in the center.

For our mains, Brett ordered the Rib Eye steak (cooked to perfection!) with portobello mushroom (£18.95), and i ordered Pan Fried Fillet Sea Bass with bouillabaisse sauce (£17.95). The fish flaked off the fork, and the sauce was so rich and amazing - brilliant drizzled over the vegetables and potato that accompanied. We also ordered a side of Mediterranean vegetables (£2.50) - but we barely touched these, as we were so full from the rest of the meal!

At the end of the meal, our waiter brought out some homemade shortbread cookies and bon-bons as a post-meal treat. It just kept getting better and better!

Amazing ambiance in this sweet little French spot - impeccable service, sweet little surprises, and melt-in-your-mouth food - L'Assiette is definitely one of Bournemouth's best kept secrets!

Bon Appetite!

Romeo and Juliet - at the Symphony!

Seattle Symphony:
Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliette

He Said:

This week I jumped out of my comfort zone and took the missus to one of the self termed “traditional triple” of romantic date nights - The Seattle Symphony (Romeo and Juliet).

I’d be interested in hearing the opinions of the fairer gender but amongst us lads, the symphony, ballet and opera are the three traditional, romantic dates that you all go ga-ga over?? Thoughts?

Anyways, I’m not going to give a review of the performance itself because in the end we went to see a band play and how a live band rates for a datenight is highly personal. I love AC/DC, you may hate it (if you get my drift). But what I will do is provide a few tips and thoughts for those, like me and Mandy, going to symphony for the first time.

The cheaper tickets are actually the ones closest to the stage. We were 4 rows back and paid $17 bucks a pop, which makes the whole deal relatively cheap. The reasoning is the sound isn’t as good from the front, as most of it will fly over your ears. Whatever, sounded alright to me - but it does give you the advantage of being up close and personal with the band and conductor. This is pretty cool. Throw in a singer on the odd occasion and it's the best seat in the house.

I thought the whole thing was best described as stiff. From the seats to the crowd to the jerking movements of the some of the violinists and finally the dance, if you can call it that, of the conductor. At some points, if I didn't know better, I would have called 911 and got the bloke some medication for the apparent fit he was having.

Maybe it was the best performance of any symphony ever but the crowd seemed to throw out standing ovations whilly nilly. Every section ended with an extended applaud followed by a standing ovation. Where I come from these are reserved for absolutely amazing feats, rather than a regular performance. But then maybe symphony goers are more emotional about their music. More thoughts?

If you’re immature like me, don’t have a few beers before the show because the above mentioned jerking dance from the conductor will make you lose it. It is absolutely impossible not to think about pez dispensers.

Overall I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy myself. The musicians really are talented and some of the songs did provoke emotion. While it’s not something I’d do every week, I’d certainly whack it in the “things to do annually” box and if Mandy is anything to go by, the girls will love it.

Cheers,
Brett

She Said:

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Could be the 2 ciders i had with work friends before dinner, or the beer i had with dinner (went to Thoa's on First and Union - we got a $25 gift certificate for only $1 on one of Restaurant.com's Deal of the Hour, so we couldn't pass it up!) or the beers we had at intermission (Benaroya hall serves alcohol!!) ...

I definitely felt the emotion in each piece. The story was Romeo and Juliet, and you really could hear the battle, the love, the sadness in all the songs.

It's amazing the feelings that can come from the sound of the symphony. And also, i thoroughly enjoyed watching the musicians - being 4 rows from the front, it was really fun to watch the passion in some of these players.

We had a great time. Like Brett said, it was certainly stiff and stuffy, not our typical scene... but something you have to experience at least once in your life! i'd LOVE to go back this month for the Charlie Brown Christmas!

Happy Dating!

Thoa's Restaurant
96 Union Street
(206) 344-8088

Romance: 4 - any time we can get fancy together, i consider it romantic. :)

Cool Ambiance/Interior: Thoa's felt like a hotel restaurant. Not particularly cozy or noteworthy. Benaroya Hall, however, is pretty stunning.

All Around Service: 4 - Thoa's service was excellent, and of course, The Symphony delivered. Nothing but class.

Cost: Thoa's had an amazing happy hour - and it lasts till 7! Apps are $5 and quite filling. We shared 4 and a main course, had 2 beers, and it came to $40!

Would we recommend it? Thoa's? Not really. There are a TON of places near Benaroya that i probably would've preferred over this, but, alas, we had a voucher! The Symphony? YES. Go at least once. We won't be season ticket holders by any means, but i really do feel more cultured after having experienced it! Especially this time of year.

Central Cinema Rocks - Literally...

Central Cinema's
Rock Anthem Singalong

He Said:

Central Cinema. Plain old-fashioned, bloody good fun. That’s what first comes to mind when describing Central Cinemas’ Rock Anthem Singalong.

When Mandy first said what the deal was for Date Night, I really didn’t pay it much thought. ‘Another trip to the movies - whoop di do’. I of course would never say anything like that out loud to my bride but rather gave the newly married-man staple “Sounds great honey”. But I was wrong. So very wrong, as the Central Cinema is infinitely more than a regular trip to the pictures.

Straight from their website, "Central Cinema is Seattle's only Dine-In Cinema is located in the Central District neighborhood at 21st & Union. A place close to home for your total Date-Nite experience in one spot." What more can I say? It really is just that.

Central Cinema offers off-the-wall cinema features coupled with a fully fledged restaurant/bar and in cinema dining. You wont find the newest, latest releases at Central but rather an eclectic mix of classics, cult favorites and random events. Our random event was a showing of classic 80’s rock anthem video clips. Think AC/DC, Journey, early Beastie Boys. Ahhhhhh music heaven!

Look, I’ll be the first to admit the missus and I are 80’s tragics so this night was made for us. I sometimes think we were born 20 years too late. And not just because of the music. The movies (who doesn’t love Top Gun!), the style (have you seen Mandy’s hair in the morning?) but most importantly the attitude - everything about the decade rocked, and so did the Central Cinema.

Coupled with the video clips, we were also treated to 2 part set from Seattle’s premier air guitar band Airpocalypse. You may have seen them on one of those Americas got X talent idol shows or what ever it is. Anyways-bloody hilarious and I highly recommend seeing them! Armed with blow up guitars, a greasy meal and a lot of beer the whole night was awesome!

Lastly, I wont promise you the most comfortable seat at Central Cinema. Nor does it have the best picture and sound quality around and the food could be better. BUT I do promise you a cracking good time. The atmosphere is second to none (for a Cinema) in the greater Seattle region.

Cheers,
Brett

I'd just like to call out one little bit from Brett's post:

At-Home Cooking Class: BEST. DATE. EVER.

Personal At-Home Cooking Class
with Bourgeoisie Brunch's Chef Ricky

He Said:

This for me is the alpha date. The Ferrari of dates. The luxury Dubai hotel, the fine bottle of wine of dates. It’s the Rolex, the Red Hook, the Seahawks winning the Superbowl and more than one week of summer in Seattle of dates.

Well maybe it’s not that good – but its pretty damn great.

Want to impress someone? Sweep them off their feet, pamper them, and have an absolute ripper of a time while you do it? Walk a few steps in the shoes of the mega-rich??

Of course you do, who bloody wouldn’t. For my birthday recently, Mandy did this by surprising me with a home chef!

Rick Flickenger from Bourgeoisie Brunch is a 5 star chef, culinary instructor, and all-around top bloke. He specializes in intimate cooking classes as well as being personal chef.

A budding home chef myself, Mandy organized an at-home cooking class for me as a birthday gift.

With a predetermined budget and menu (Mandy helped), Ricky handles everything, turning up with all of the ingredients and everything needed to cook.

After a quick introduction, and armed with a sneaky glass (or six) of red, we got straight into it. With Ricky, you can do everything and take full advantage of a proper class structure, or do nothing and enjoy the experience of your very own chef. For us it was 80/20 with Ricky getting involved when I was out of my depth or busy chewing his and Mandy’s ears off.

Making a full three course dinner with meals that would feel at home in any local fine dining restaurant, Ricky provides an in-depth lesson on the technique you’re applying and why it makes the food so good.

Lastly I’d like to mention how casual it was. Nothing was rushed, awkward, uncomfortable or forced. We’d prepare a course, eat together at the counter, share some wine and savor the moment. It really was something special.

Cheers,
Brett

She Said:

Brett’s right. This truly was one of the most amazing nights we’ve ever had as a couple, and it was all thanks to Ricky’s creativity and charm.

Brett has been cooking heaps since moving into our new place (and finally having a kitchen we can both move around in!) so I thought it’d be the perfect gift to get him an at-home cooking lesson. Not that he needs it, but I knew there were some techniques he’s been itching to learn, and it never hurts to keep learning! ☺

I found Ricky on craigslist when doing a search for ‘personal chef’ and boy, did I luck out! Ricky offers an array of cooking classes throughout the city, if that’s more your thing, but also does house calls.

This made it truly special.

We put our heads to gether on a budget (he even stayed under!) and some ideas for foods to cook, and he did the rest. Showed up right on time, boxes and bags full of the freshest finest foods.

We spent 4 hours, 3 courses (and thousands of calories) talking, laughing, cooking, sharing wine and stories. We ended the night with full bellies a great new friend.

The only thing I’ll warn you about – this is probably not the best first date, as it’s super intimate.

It would work, but only if you want your special someone to get down on one knee and propose at the end of the night. That’s the effect this night will have on you!

Definitely recommend this as a special Date Night… and it cost us less than a night at the Met! Can’t beat that.

Betty is BOMB.

Betty Restaurant

She Said:

Okay.

If any of you know us, you know about the miserable time we had at Crow on lower Queen Anne. Could be because we were seated behind the door so the waitress forgot about us. Twice.

Could be because it took us 3 hours to eat, and not in an Elemental @ Gasworks sort of way.

Or could be because the food just WASN’T good. (Peas floating in chicken broth for $8... No, but thanks for thinking of us.)

Probably was a combination of all three.

So, you can imagine our apprehension when we were looking for a place to have a bite for last week’s Date Night, and the only place without a 20-minute-plus wait (Emmer&Rye, we’ll be back!) that we hadn’t already been to was Crow's sister restaurant, Betty.

But, we were starving, and decided to give it a try. We’re equal opportunity diners, and don’t judge a restaurant by its siblings. Okay, we do, but we shouldn’t.

Because Betty.Was.Fabulous.

From start (the secret entrance, open floor plan, large picture windows, and our ADORABLE 60s inspired waitress) to finish (an appetizer, two entrées, 3 beers, unlimited bread paired with the most amazing olive oil/balsamic mixture for under $70!), we were blown away. And we went in already hating the place, so this was impressive ...

We started our culinary adventure with the tomato heirloom plate ($12, and worth every cent), which according to the sign out front was “back by popular demand”.

And thank GOD it was, because it was phenomenal.

A medley of ripe and sweet tomatoes, doused in olive oil, basil, and goat’s cheese - it was a welcome twist on the Caprese salad – but I’ll tell you, goat’s cheese kicks mozzarella’s ass in any competition, and Brett and I all but licked the plate clean. We had to have thirds on our bread to sop up all the deliciousness. And our waitress was more than happy to oblige!

Brett and I decided to share our mains – he the pan-roasted chicken fingerling potatoes, roasted garlic, & natural jus ($17) and me the catch of the day, which today was salmon ($25). Both were phenomenal! Although the salmon was a little over-cooked, the garnish made up for it – roasted peppers and vegetables covered in some sort of delicious gravy. I don’t even remember... I think I blacked out while eating it it was that good.

We both finished our plates with happy faces and full bellies. Our waitress came over and chatted us a bit, and all we could do was sing to her our praises of this place. She laughed because she had heard before that Betty was the reigning champion of this restaurant family.

Our only regret? Not trying her out sooner. Especially since she’s just up the hill from us. Definitely recommend. Not necessarily the most romantic of restaurants, but the food shined like few restaurants’ do these days. We’ll certainly be back, those heirloom tomatoes have too strong and sweet a siren song for us to stay away for long.

Hot Yoga Date Night: Not Suitable for a First Date!

BREATHE Hot Yoga
+Eat Local

She Said:

Getting back into the swing of things, Brett and I decided to continue with our once-monthly tradition of Healthy Date Nights with a night of Hot Yoga!

Now, let me warn you, this date idea is not for the weak of heart. Or for a first date. In fact, this may be the WORST date idea ever, unless you really know the person well. Or you don’t care that (s)he sees you the nastiest you’ve ever looked in your life.

What is Hot Yoga? Well, you can read about it here. But basically, you do an hour and a half of yoga poses in a room heated anywhere from 85 – 115 degrees. It’s crazy! But also the most exhilarating thing you can do for yourself EVER.

Brett and I have both enjoyed hot yoga separately, but never together! We picked up some vouchers on Groupon for a month of hot yoga at our neighborhood studio Breathe for like $25 bucks. That’s one thing about this practice – it’s super pricey, so it’s great to keep an eye on Groupon or living social for some good deals. Most studios offer an introductory package for cheap, too, in case you hate it (but you won’t! you HAVE to go at least twice and then you’ll be addicted!).

We showed up a bit early (good to do before a first class), well hydrated and scantily clad. Breathe is unlike any yoga studio I’ve been to. Their waiting room is actually a personal training room full of really fun workout contraptions, so while you’re waiting for the class before you to file out, you can try your hand at the balance ball!

The studio was great – bright and sunny; because it is not a Bikram studio, but simply Hot Yoga, there is no stinky carpet! Yay! And there is a temperature variation from the front (110 degrees) to the back (85 degrees) of the room, so you can choose your row depending on how hot you would like to be. Genius!

We laid our mats down in the back (85 degrees). Brett and I kept trying to make each other giggle in the front mirror throughout the workout. We bent and stretched in unholy ways, in unholy heat. But at the end of it all, you are filled with such a renewed sense of self! It’s an unbelievable feeling!

The coolest thing about Breathe Date Night is that they have a freezer in the lobby with frozen meals from Queen Anne’s Eat Local! Eat Local prepared foods are made with Northwest farmed, organic or sustainably grown produce, grass fed and finished meats andfree range chicken.

Because yoga lasts 90 minutes, and you are so spent by the time it is over, the last thing you are wanting to do is cook a meal! So Brett grabbed the pot pie, and I grabbed the onion pizza, and we headed home for a yummy meal on the couch, after a great workout! And it was delicious!

NOT a romantic date, per se, but certainly something fun to do with your someone if you have not tried it yet, and if you are open minded and comfortable enough to look like this around him or her!
