Seattle Date Night: The Big ... Black Bottle?

June 18th, 2009:
The Big Picture and Black Bottle

He Said:

Wanker: wank⋅er  /ˈwæŋkər/ [wang-ker] [noun] “Someone that thinks they're 'cool' but in reality is a total knob jockey”

So why begin this blog with a phrase commonly used among us colonials I hear you ask? Well, the place we went on Thursday was full of them!

Last week Mandy and I travelled into the heart of Belltown and its famous Big Picture theatre (2505 First Avenue, Seattle), to catch the soon to be classic comedy flick, The Hangover ($11/ticket, 21 and older).

The Big Picture is more than just a movie theatre. With a full service bar and plush, classic styled lounge, it’s a great place for groups to get together, have a few drinks and enjoy a good movie.

The big hook here though and my favorite thing of all is the drink delivery service! A brilliant concept, all you have to do is let the bartender know what drinks you want and when you want them throughout the movie and like magic, they’ll appear. Accio Manny’s!

So with that, the Big Picture is really cool. A must if you’re looking for a slightly different theatre experience. The wanker spiel at the start is due completely to the location. For the uninitiated, Belltown is the hip, well-off young professional’s part of downtown Seattle. Lots of well paid lawyers, accountants and Microsoft employees. I lived there when I first moved here as did Mandy and let’s face it; we’re as big a wanker as the next guy!

After the film, we headed across the road for a light tea at the Black Bottle (2600 1st Avenue, Seattle). A trendy little wine bar, I enjoyed the masala chicken drums ($6) and some local beer braised sausages ($11). Tip top! Mandy had the smoked chicken and sun-dried cherry flatbread ($9) which she enjoyed thoroughly.

All in all a great way to see a great flick and a nice and relaxing Thursday date night.

Things to know about The Big Picture:

1] It’s located underneath El Gaucho. Not overly-obvious where it is, but it’s there. You’ll see the signs once you enter the building El Gaucho is in.

2] Buy tickets online if you can ($11, plus $1 service charge. Total = $24), because it sells out almost every night.

3] Get there at LEAST 30 minutes early. This allows you enough time to hang out in the (adorably shabby-chic) lobby before the seating opens, and then when it does open, you get first dibs (the theater is pretty small)

4] EAT BEFORE YOU GO. For some reason, I thought they served dinner while you watched the film, and arrived ready to eat a nice big meal... This is not the case, and our "meal" ended up consisting of a tub of popcorn and some Mike 'n' Ikes...

5] Don’t have to pee. EVER. There is only 1 stall. And they were out of TP when I went (i don't want to talk about it).

6] You can drink WHILE watching the film. It's amazing. But this also means, no one under the age of 21 is allowed.

7] For those of you on the Eastside... they have a Redmond location! Be sure to check it out. (7411 166th Ave NE, Redmond)

Things to know about Black Bottle:

1]
GO! IMMEDIATELY! It’s fabulous!

RATINGS:

The Big Picture:
Romance: 2.5 (too many groups for it to be overly-romantic)
Cool Ambiance/Interior: 5 (the place is decorated so RAD!)
All Around Service: 2 (need more staff - wait was too long)
Cost: $
Would we recommend it? 4: Good! Not GREAT, but good.

Black Bottle:
Romance: 4
Cool Ambiance/Interior: 4 (simple and cool, loved it!)
All Around Service: 5 (is always great! wait staff great at recommending food)
Cost: $$
Would we recommend it? 5: Yes! This place is awesome.

The Hangover: 5+++
Hands down, best movie Brett and i have seen in AGES. We both LOVED it! so funny, so much fun! and it helps to see it at a movie theater where you can drink WHILE watching the film!

**Next week's date night will be a post documenting our first Los Angeles Date Night! Be sure to stay tuned, especially those of you down in the Golden State!**

Too funny, Mandy! We're doing this tonight. I think we might hit up El Gaucho happy hour instead of Black Bottle though cause I was just there on Sunday night with a friend. Black Bottle is seriously one of my favorite places!
Cheers!

Thanks, Susan! Quinn's is on our list, was one of the first places we tried to go to on Date Night when they first opened, but the wait was so long, we ended up at Tango instead! Perhaps now that the newness has worn off, we can try it again!

I'll definitely check out Crush, too! :)
