Mistral Kitchen Nightmares!

Mistral Kitchen

He Said:

Mistral Kitchen: I don’t even want to talk about this place. So much so, I’m just gunna bullet point the Cons and Pros. I’m starting with cons because I like to finish things positively.

Cons

· Worst service I’ve had in the region (Northern Hemisphere). It took the title proudly held for two years from Monroe KFC.

· Arrogant – When we asked for salt and peper the waiter surprisingly asked “You want salt and pepper?” Yes mate, that’s why we asked. On his return he delivered the goods with a sly “Well now you’re the only table with salt and pepper in here”. Listen here Seattle – unless you’ve got a Michelin star or a food network TV show don’t assume you know how to season to everyone’s taste.

· We thought we were in Barolo

· Our meals were small and guess what… UNDERSEASONED. Maybe because we had their salt. I had the pork chop which was frankly boring. Mandy’s fish was nothing to write home about either.

Pros

· The coffee was fantastic

Cheers, Brett

Note: this is completely my OPINION.

She Said:

Listen guys, it wasn't all that bad. It's in a prime South Lake Union-meets-Downtown location - and would be a perfect lunch date spot! We have heard some great things about the food... we just feel we didn't quite luck out on our trip in.

There was actually a couple sitting next to us on, what looked to be, a first date. They both looked bored senseless. Now, this is more about their personalities and less about the place, but it helps ease things along when you're cozy (not crammed up next to another table), when the service is so impeccable you want to cheer about it, and the food is amazing you HAVE to share it.

These things - food, ambiance, and service - are paramount to making Date Night a success. There's potential here, but just wasn't our favorite Date Night spot...

The Capital Disaster!

The Capital Grille

He Said:

They bloody fooled me!

With their rich mahogany paneling, suit-donned staff, cozy lighting and impressive artwork; I walked into the Capital Grille expecting a IMG_2651one of the kind, unique five star meal. Thinking I had organized a Metro Grill-esk dining experience, I was sure I was gunna knock it out of the park with the missus. I even bragged about it. “Wait till you see the doozie I’ve got install for ya tonight love” rang across our Belltown condo. Unfortunately, I was wrong.

IMG_2653 As we’ve previously mentioned, we try to stay away from chain restaurants (chainy’s). Look, they have their place in the culinary world. Maybe you’ve got something cool organized after tea and you’re looking for something quick, easy and thoughtless, yeah, I can see that. But when all you’ve got organized is a hyped-up dinner, do you self a favor: grab a 10-foot barge pole and try not to touch one. We prefer locally owned and operated establishments using local, seasonal produce. It’ll always be better.

To the Capital Grille’s credit, it took me a little while to work out I was in a chainy. Like I said, the place is decorated beautifully and romantically for that matter. You’ll find the staff impeccably dressed providing even better service, and it even has personalized locker type boxes for those wankers, I mean fancy people who like to leave alcohol at the restaurant to show off to their golfing buddies.

Actually, for any of our readers who’ve seen/know about these lockers, what’s the deal??? Mandy, bless her, knew straight away what I’d gotten us into but didn’t have the heart to tell me.

Anyways, it all started to come unstuck for the Capital when I saw the menu. The thing was huge. I’d say A3 in Australian terms. Restauranting 101 states that all the best restaurants keep it small and simple. Following this, the next thing I noticed was the other clientele. Or lack thereof. 8 o’clock on Thursday will be packed in most restaurants worth visiting.

IMG_2657 Lastly the food. While it sounded great, unfortunately the mash was over-seasoned and my steak was well, WELL over cooked. I ordered medium rare but received dried up old car tire. Nothing but a chainy would have such disrespect for their ingredients. The chainy's cover was blown.

Whilst I’d planned a disastrous dinner, we like to share and learn from all of our dates. Lesson learnt here, especially for the lads, do your research and stay local!

Cheers, Brett

She Said:

So, as Brett mentioned above, the Capital Grille left much to be desired. I think what angered us the most was that it was Restaurant Week in Seattle - well, that's not what angered us, but the results which came from that...

IMG_2654Restaurant Week is the biggest dining promotion to ever hit King County. Running for two weeks in April (and again in October) the promotion, allows diners to have the opportunity to indulge in $25 three-course dinners at over 106 of the area’s best restaurants, some also offering $15 three-course lunches.

What a GREAT way to bring new clientele into your establishment and show them exactly what you're made of, for the fraction of the price.

We HAD to take advantage of this promotion. Brett had walked by the Capital Grille and thought it had a very steak-housy-fun-classy vibe to it, and thought he'd pull out all stops and take me there, out of all the restaurants to choose from for Restaurant Week.

We arrived and, like Brett said, were blown away with how classy the interior looked. Was really nice and moody. Not "Mandy-before-she's-had-her-dinner-and-is-starving-and-angry" moody, but the good kind of moody - soft lighting, big overstuffed booths, jazzy music, 30- and 40-something's clinking martini-glasses in the bar after a hard day's work.

We were escorted to the front section and seated in our own private booth at the far wall. Was a cute little area all our own. But then we looked around and noticed who we were sitting by: the jeans-clad guy still wearing his convention badge... and the lady who was on a date with herself... and her iphone... and the tattooed and tattered young couple who was friends with the busboy and came for free bread and bottomless diet cokes.

Yes, we were put in the rejects section.

Both Brett and i went to the bathroom multiple times just so we could get a glimpse into the real restaurant. Where all the action was happening.

We should have expected it. He and i showed up in our jeans and track jackets - not exactly the dress code for a fancy place like this. Learned our lesson quickly.

I digress.

The thing that irked me the most, is that when we ordered, and our food arrived, it was clear that the food we chose was cooked in bulk and had most likely been sitting in the back in a massive pot for quite some time.

IMG_2660 IMG_2659 IMG_2656

Now, this is certainly just my opinion, but the mashed potatoes and the creamed spinach were both left virtually untouched by two ravenous 20-somethings who were desperate for food... This speaks volumes of its quality.

Brett's steak was not properly cooked, and my salmon was dry and tasteless.IMG_2658

Throw at least a sprig of rosemary on there or SOMEthing. We understand that they probably have a ton of people ordering off the Restaurant Week menu, but this is also the opportunity to wow potential new 'regulars'... a chance to show folks just what you can do in the kitchen.

We were thoroughly disappointed, because the place has so much potential. And VERY cool art. Our waiter was attentive and never left us wanting for more water, bread (the bread was AMAZING!) or the check...which we were all-too-happy to request once our wine glasses were empty.

I'll agree with Brett on this - if you're hoping to wow your lady with a great steak dinner, go local; or at least go sometime besides Restaurant Week... where you're just another number.

logo_market This weekend, why not head down to Pike Place Market? One of my favorite things to do with Brett is catch the bus or monorail ($4 each round trip) down to Westlake Center and walk the 4 blocks down to the market. pike-place-market

From there, we start at one end of the market and work our way down and back, picking up little snacks, fruits, breads, spreads, veggies, pastries, and fruit logs along the way. The market is ‘chock-a-block full’ (Australian for ‘really full’) of farm fresh produce by local vendors. You can’t swing a cricket bat without hitting something you’re dying to sink your teeth into!

Once we’ve gathered enough for a mini-meal, we head to the park at the end of the market ( on Western and Virginia ) and enjoy the meal!

pike_place_marketFrom there, you can continue a historic walk through the market and post alley… you can head up to Cinerama and catch a flick… or you can hit up the Seattle Art Museum. The possibilities of fun things to do in this city are endless, it just depends on what you’re in the mood for!

If you want to be lead through the city by the experts, why not go on a professional tour? Seattle Bites Food Tours, Seattle by Foot, Savor Seattle, and the Market itself (only $10 for this tour!) all offer exceptional tours at affordable prices! Be sure to check them out, and have fun being a tourist in your own city! [Photo credits]

Date Night: ACRONYM Style!

January 14th, 2010:
KFC and IMAX

He Said:

We’ve all heard the rule that if something sounds too good to be true, it generally is too good to be true. Common sense really. The old sniff test so to speak.

Same goes for business as in life, and you’d be telling porky pies if you said you hadn’t fallen at one time or another for the next big thing, next easier option. As a bit of an impressionable dreamer myself, I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve been stung by many a fanciful tale of something being the next revolutionary and great thing. Be it the guaranteed, game-changing sale at work, the ever-sharp miracle blade perfection series III through to the thought of Sarah Palin going away as soon as the election was over, this school boy gullibleness is something I’ve been working on eliminating.

With this in mind, Date Night this week involved two things that I categorically thought were too good to be true. Avatar 3D at the IMAX, and KFC’s Under 400 calories meal for $3.95 (Penned, "a penny a calorie meal"). I’ll begin with the KFC.

kfc

Firstly, I’m a big fan of the dirty bird. One of the greatest hangover cures in the Western world; nothing brings you back to life like a 2 piece feed on a foggy Sunday afternoon.

But as I’m now in the midst of preparing for an October beach wedding, Colonel Sanders and his mates have been black-listed for the remainder of the year.

Until of course, I heard about the new health meal. To be honest when I first heard of the Under 400 meal, I thought the old colonel had a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock. I mean how on earth can you get a whole meal at KFC under 400 calories?! IMG_2190

Having faith in Uncle Sam’s advertizing laws, I quickly concluded that either the meal tasted horrible and/or the portion size would be tiny. I was wrong with both.

IMG_2189 The meal consists of 2 pieces of the new grilled chicken, potato and gravy, green beans and a diet coke. All of it bloody beautiful and big enough to fill me up. I was stoked and a little remorseful that I didn’t believe my old mate who has nursed me back to health numerous times over the years. And for only $3.95, it’s now on my weekly lunch list.

Regarding Avatar, well we’ve all seen the media hype about how good it really is. avatar_imax_poster Be it the endless morning show interviews, news paper articles, online reviews and stream of Facebook posts, I thought to myself, can it really be that good?

THAT GOOD!

With it making enough money to single handedly end the world’s recession, you’ve all probably seen it and have reviewed it for yourselves so you don’t need to hear my waffle about the film details so in short it is amazing. Visually the best movie I’ve ever seen and for the 3 people that haven’t seen it, make sure you do in IMAX 3D.

IMG_2196 I don’t know how I can go back to normal 2D, non-6-story-high screens from now on.

You’ll feel like you’re literally in the movie.

To round out this short review, I was a little disappointed in the story. It’s a great, feel good, rounded story but absolutely not original.

Also I was stoked to see an Aussie taking the lead role though for the 300 or so swillion they spent on the flick you would have thought they’d fork out a little cash on an accent coach. I could of sworn he said “G’day mate” in there somewhere.

None the less, Avatar is a winner. It is the kind of movie that personally I could watch over and over again.

Cheers,

Brett

She Said:

Brett summed our night up pretty well! I got lucky and scored some tickets to Avatar IMAX 3-D at Seattle Center's IMAX (literally across the street from us! Bonus!) the day before Date Night.IMG_2197

When i called, they only had 3 tickets left! I snagged 2 of them ($13 each plus $3 handling fee plus $2.50 processing fee plus the promise of your first born child) and was happy to pay it. This show has been sold out EVERY NIGHT since its opening on December 18th, so i recommend calling ahead to get your tickets. If you just show up expecting to see the show, you won't.

IMG_2194 Another tip: GET. THERE. EARLY. It's a freakin' cattle call trying to get into the theater and getting a seat. Folks line up two hours in advance to get the prime seating. Don't get there THAT early, that's just crazy. But definitely plan on being there at LEAST a half hour before the show starts. They have fun activities and toys in the lobby you can play with, and also a great snack bar that sells DIBS for only $4. So you have time to eat about 3 boxes before the show starts. PERFECT!

Lastly: Don't sit close to the front! You do this (especially with 3D) and you will seriously puke from motion sickness.

ENJOY the show! IMG_2192

Like a lot of fun, and like it fast? Me too. Which is why you HAVE to check out 14/48 at ACT Theater this (final!) weekend.

1452 According to the ACT Website, 14/48 -- the world's quickest theater festival -- is 14 plays conceived, written, designed, scored, rehearsed and performed in 48 hours.

The combination of deadline, talent, speed, nerves and genius inspiration serve to strip away the creative inhibitions from more traditional theater, proving that, contrary to popular opinion, sometimes the first idea is the best. 14/48 involves more than 75 artists per weekend with at least 25% participating for the first time. Artistic participation is by invitation only and is predicated on the most rigorous professional standards.

act Tickets can be purchased to this whirlwind event online ($20) or at the door ($25).

Still confused? Me too. Let’s read THIS together to find out what this whole festival is REALLY all about!

ACT Theatre
700 Union St

Start the night off with dinner and beers at the Tap House Grill (at 1506 6th Ave). Remember to start early, because with over 160 beers on tap, trying them all will take you a while! Be sure to check out the Boundary Bay IPA – one of my FAVORITES!

Seattle Date Night: Oui, Oui, Ew Ew!

November 7th, 2009:
Bodies Exhibit and Chez Shea

She Said:

So this weekend, Brett and I decided to take our own dating advice. We both love gross things. We both love bodies. We both love the show Grey's Anatomy. We both love downtown Seattle. We both love beef jerky. We both love Monster Trucks. SO, where can you find all of these things minus the Monster Trucks in one place? Why, the Bodies Exhibit of course!

Saturday night, we headed down to 5th and Pike Street (the old Adidas building across from Banana Republic) and, for $19/per person, gained access to some of the most gruesome and awesome sights of our lives.

We went into this exhibit with only minimal knowledge: We knew that it was a display of once-alive human bodies. We knew we would have access to sights that most people don't get to see without an MD... or jail time. We knew that there was some controversy surrounding the exhibit. Apart from that, we didn't know much. The space was small but held a ton of information. About 7 or 8 full human bodies posed in positions that showed how the muscles and bones and joints work... They had on display black lungs, a cirrhosis liver, a breast tumor, both sets of reproductive organs, gall stones... It had an entire section that showed the nervous system (no idea how they did this... was amazing) and of course, the famous 'body slice' guy...well, a couple of them.

WOW.

Was pretty amazing. VERY gross, but also pretty amazing to see the insides of my body. There was also a booth where you could go and actually FEEL some of the body parts. Yes, Brett and i held brains and liver. We immediately sanitized the bejeesus out of our hands...

...Before heading out to eat dinner!

Brett's original plan for dinner was Sushi. I however, had some apprehension on eating Sushi after seeing what we were going to see ... Once he'd been through the exhibition, Brett agreed. So instead, we decided to wander down Pike Street towards the Market.

We settled for French food at Chez Shea instead (thank GOD!).

We were able to snag the last table in the lounge (lucky... we didn't have reservations and it was 8.30 on a Saturday night!). Chez Shea is a cute little French bistro located above the Pike Place Market. It is small and cozy. The wait staff is super friendly.

We ordered a half-carafe of wine each (Brett the red, me the white) for only $5 per (they each hold about 2 glasses of wine). The white was beautiful! I ordered my meal from the special 2+1 for $25 menu, and got mussels, a crab salad, and small cheese plate. Brett ordered the rack of lamb ($29). Our bread and herb-infused oil arrived and we dug in.

We started to talk about the Bodies exhibit and how we thought it was strange that all the bodies were all clearly of Chinese descent. This of COURSE made Brett want to research it instantly, so he whipped out Wikipedia on his iPhone.

We soon learned that the Bodies exhibit that we had attended was one of two Bodies exhibits touring the world. One (Body World) used full-consenting donors for the bodies displays. The other (Bodies, the Exhibition... the one we went to) was rumored to have used bodies who were once Chinese prisoners that had been executed. And sold to the exhibit. Without consent. On the Black Market. For $300.

Brett and I were flabbergasted! We couldn't' believe what we were reading. It made the whole experience that we had just been through all that more creepy and gruesome!

Brett seriously couldn't shake the feeling. Until, of course our mussels arrived.

(Yes, i started making EXTREMELY crude jokes about 'mussels' ... and the bodies we had just seen... to where Brett almost punched me in the face across the table.)

But all jokes aside, the mussels were AMAZING. They were in a warm butter broth with chunks of chorrizo. The combination of the spicy chorrizo, the salty mussels and the rich broth worked magically together.

Brett's lamb arrived along with my crab salad. Neither of us were overly impressed. Brett was expecting more than just two small pieces of lamb for the $29. My crab salad was tiny and not very flavorful... and it took quite a while for us to get our food. The waitress (she was very sweet!) had to apologize twice for the wait. No matter, we weren't in a hurry. But just make note of that if you're headed to a show or a movie or Showgirls afterwards.

We finished the meal with a small cheese plate that was part of my 2+1 for $25 dish, and Brett had an espresso. We nibbled on 3 amazing cheeses and finished our wine. The bill came and there was a mistake on it (they had charged us for 2 of the 2+1 for $25 AND for Brett's lamb) so we alerted the waitress and she was mortified. Made the change immediately.

We left full and satisfied, and headed home after an interesting evening.

I highly recommend seeing the Bodies Exhibit, even though it did leave both Brett and me feeling a bit dirty.

However, there isn't a lot of opportunity in life to see what we saw on Saturday night... we learned a lot, and i can say it is one of the most memorable Date Nights I've ever had!! (A tip, though -- do NOT go to Sushi for dinner afterwards!)

**Also of note! Chez Shea is participating in this month's Dine Around Seattle: 3 Course Meals for $30! Check out their offerings here!

RATINGS:

Romance: Bodies exhibit: 2/Chez Shea: 5

Cool Ambiance/Interior: Both: 4

All Around Service: Chez Shea: Slow service, but very friendly: 3

Would we recommend it? 4: Yes on both, but keep an open mind.
